Muzzle Up!
Let’s talk about muzzles for a brief minute!
Yes, they may look intimidating. They may look barbaric and even be downright uncomfortable for people to accept. But did you know that the use of a muzzle is an indication of responsibility? It’s a barrier for safety when we are unsure (or sometimes super sure!) of a dog’s reaction to a stimulus. Some dogs wear muzzles to be around other dogs safely. Some dogs wear muzzles who have a huge problem with grabbing things on walks to where it is a health risk. Some dogs wear muzzles who may need to be in close proximity to people and they have a bite history. And yes, you guessed it, some dogs need muzzles when offering nail trims (or any body handling for that matter!)
I am always reading your dog when I come to offer a nail trim. Classic signs I look out for can be subtle, but can be bite indicators. Body stiffening, whale eyes, or a tight mouth with lip licking. Other times it is downright obvious when there are snarls, showing of teeth, and even snaps. Take no offense when I make the choice to muzzle your pet for the safety of all involved. Because let’s be real here.. I need my fingers to perform my job and never do I want to put myself or you in a position to where there may be teeth to skin contact. We are making the choice to be responsible, and safe!
Some of my pet owners already preventatively make the choice to muzzle their dogs, which I ALWAYS appreciate. If you have the understanding that your dog may be a potential bite risk, THANK YOU. When I initially screen your pet prior to meeting, this is why sharing temperament information when it comes to nail trims is so important. Please, never feel embarrassed if your pet needs a muzzle! It’s never worth it to get bit!
All in all, Don’t fear the muzzle!
