Health Importance of Nails

I work on both preventative and curative care when it comes to your pet’s nail health.

Often overlooked, your dog’s nails play a huge role in their overall well-being.  It is important to make sure nail trims become a part of regular care.  I am always advocating for short nails with ongoing maintenance.  When your dog’s nails are too long & hit the floor constantly as he/she walks, this puts more pressure on the nail bed. This constant pressure causes discomfort that forces your dog to distribute his/her weight differently while he/she walks to compensate where there is no pain. This ultimately affects the way their toe and paw joints are aligned. You can literally see instant relief and posture changes after a good nail trim with a dog who is overdue.  Sometimes resistance with a nail trim comes from the association of discomfort with the toes.  On the other end of the spectrum, together we can prevent any of these issues with regular nail maintenance.

So how often should we be trimming your dog’s nails? While each dog may vary depending on their lifestyle and specific nail growth, I usually see most of my dogs anywhere from every 3-6 weeks, and some 8-12 weeks.  It is rare that a dog can go 3+ months without a nail trim to stay out of harm’s way.  Let’s take care of your pet’s overall well-being with regular nail care!
